ETA 2892 vs 2824: which is thinner
The ETA 2892-A2 is the thinner of the two at about 3.6mm high, against roughly 4.6mm for the 2824-2, even though the two share a similar diameter.
The height difference
Both movements sit near 11.5 lignes in diameter, so they look alike from above. The difference is in thickness. The 2824-2 stands around 4.6mm high, while the 2892-A2 is around 3.6mm, roughly a millimetre slimmer. That millimetre is why the 2892-A2 is the movement of choice where a maker wants a thinner, dressier watch.
It is also why you cannot assume one drops into a case built for the other, since the case depth and dial height differ.
Different characters, different clones
The 2824-2 is the robust workhorse automatic, at home in tool and sports watches, and its Sellita counterpart is the SW200-1. The 2892-A2 is the thinner, generally higher-grade movement often used as a base for complications, and its Sellita clone is the SW300-1. So the choice between them is partly about height and partly about the character and role of the movement.
There is also the ETA 2801-2 to keep in mind, which is the hand-wind version of the 2824 for anyone who does not want an automatic rotor.
Choosing between them
Pick the 2824-2, or its SW200-1 clone, where you want a tougher, thicker automatic and a slightly lower cost. Pick the 2892-A2, or its SW300-1 clone, where a slimmer profile and a refined base movement matter. Whichever you choose, confirm the height against your case depth and check the stem and hand sizes, because the two are not interchangeable despite the shared diameter.
In short, the 2892-A2 wins on slimness, the 2824-2 on robustness and price.
