What makes a movement a drop-in replacement

A movement is a true drop-in only when diameter, height, stem position, hand sizes, dial feet and date layout all match, because any one of these can stop a same-size calibre from fitting.

Diameter and height get it into the case

The first two figures decide whether the movement physically fits the case. Diameter, quoted in lignes and millimetres, has to match the case opening. Height, or thickness, has to let the caseback close and set the dial at the correct level. Get these right and the movement seats; get either wrong and nothing else matters.

But a movement that seats is not yet a movement that works with your dial, hands and crown.

Stem position and height align the crown

The winding stem has to exit the movement at the same clock position and the same height as the original, so it meets the case tube and crown. A donor with the stem even slightly higher or lower, or at a different angle, will not line up with the existing crown and tube. This is one of the most common reasons a same-diameter movement will not go into a given case.

Hands, dial feet and the calendar

Your existing hands only press on if the hour, minute and second hole diameters match the new movement's pinions. The dial only locates if the dial-foot positions agree. And any date or day complication only reads correctly if the window sits where your dial's aperture is cut. A change in any of these turns a physically fitting movement into one you cannot finish the watch with.

This is why two movements of the same diameter, such as a plain-date and a day-date of the same family, are not freely interchangeable.

The short version for buyers

Matching diameter is necessary but not sufficient. It is diameter and height and stem position and hand sizes together that make a swap genuinely drop-in. A calibre that shares a diameter but differs in stem height or hand sizes will not fit a given case and dial, however close the headline number looks.
